According to Can Tho Maritime Port Authority , the dredging project to maintain the navigation channel for large tonnage ships entering the Hau River has officially started construction since the end of August.

The dredging and maintenance project for large-tonnage ships entering the Hau River aims to dredge the channel to a standard depth of -6.5m (Illustration photo).
Currently, the contractor consortium has mobilized many specialized equipment such as self-propelled belly suction vessels, 31 bottom discharge barges, 19 rope bucket excavators and 11 tugboats.
To ensure progress, the construction site will operate 24/7, including holidays, and is expected to be completed on December 5. The Port Authority recommends that ships passing through this area increase vigilance and follow the instructions of the regulatory force to ensure maritime safety.
The project will be implemented in the 2024 - 2025 period, dredging about 2.2 million m³ of mud and soil over a length of 52.6 km, a total area of 148 hectares, spanning 7 sections from the estuary to the Hau River.
After completion, the channel depth will reach -6.5 m (nautical chart system), the bottom width will be 70 m, all dredged materials will be sunk at sea.
The Hau River is an important international waterway in the lower Mekong River, connecting from the East Sea through Dinh An estuary to Can Tho, My Thoi (Vietnam) and Phnom Penh .
m Penh (Cambodia). This waterway is currently responsible for transporting a large volume of import and export goods of the Mekong Delta region.
However, Dinh An estuary is often silted up, allowing only ships with a capacity of about 5,000 DWT to enter and exit, not meeting the demand for maritime transport. Therefore, since 2007, the Ministry of Transport (now the Ministry of Construction) has approved the project to build a new shipping channel through Quan Chanh Bo - Kenh Tat - Hau River canal with a length of 52.6 km, designed for 10,000-ton fully loaded ships and 20,000-ton partially loaded ships.
This maintenance dredging is expected to help maintain the standard depth, ensure the safe entry and exit of large tonnage ships, maximize the capacity of the port system on the Hau River, and promote socio-economic development in the Mekong Delta region.
